Our Pick: Spotlight
The Big Short, Bridge of Spies, Brooklyn, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Martian, The Revenant, Room
This was a tough pick. With such great movies nominated this year we didn’t know which to go with. When recording our episode we each picked a different movie, but when revisiting the topic it was clear who we thought should win. Spotlight was an incredible movie with an amazing cast that tells a story that was recent in not only American history, but World history. Spotlight leaves you with your jaw open and wanting to know more. As a whole, we believe this movie is clearly the top dog in the category
Our Pick: Alejandro Iñárritu, The Revenant
Lenny Abrahamson, Room, Tom McCarthy, Spotlight, Adam McKay, The Big Short, George Miller, Mad Max: Fury Road
To us, Iñárritu is the clear winner. Coming off a Best Director win last year for Birdman. The veteran Mexican director’s 2015 film is visually stunning. With a shot composition that blows viewers mind, it would be quite the upset if anyone else wins. The Revenant has earned 12 nominations with good reason. That reason being Iñárritu.
Our Pick: Leonardo DiCaprio, The Revenant
Bryan Cranston, Trumbo, Matt Damon, The Martian, Michael Fassbender, Steve Jobs, Eddie Redmayne, The Danish Girl
IT’S LEO’S TIME. The four time nominee (yes, he has been nominated four fucking times) is days away from his first win. If you have been watching award season this pick comes as no shock. He has already won Best Actor in the Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild, BAFTA, and on Sunday it is practically a certainty that he will take his first win home.
Our Pick: Brie Larson, Room
Cate Blanchett, Carol, Jennifer Lawrence, Joy, Charlotte Rampling, 45 Years, Saoirse Ronan, Brooklyn
The new comer to the Oscar competition is our pick for this category. Fairly unknown in the movie world before 2015 (most notably starred in The Spectacular Now & Scott Pilgarm Vs. The World). She attained mainstream success with her role in Trainwreck starring along side comedian Amy Schumer. We believe her role in Room made this relatively unknown movie something to watch. Though Cate Blanchett is favored to win, we would love to her pull off this upset.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Our Pick: Tom Hardy, The Revenant
Christian Bale, The Big Short, Mark Ruffalo, Spotlight, Mark Rylance, Bridge of Spies, Sylvester Stallone, Creed
Yes we know Stallone is the clear favorite. We know he was awesome in Creed. Hear us out before getting angry with us. The Revenant would have not been as powerful of a movie had it not been for Tom Hardy’s villainous role. His commitment to the role should be commended as much as Leo’s commitment was. These two were a team on screen playing opposite of each other. Our theory: If Leo wins. Tom wins.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Our Pick: Rachel McAdams, Spotlight
Jennifer Jason Leigh, The Hateful Eight, Rooney Mara, Carol, Alicia Vikander, The Danish Girl, Kate Winslet, Steve Jobs
We’re not gonna lie. We only want her to win because she is the Bae of the podcast. We love anything Rachel McAdams. Critics have Alicia Vikander of The Danish Girl being the clear-cut winner. We can hope for an upset right?
There you have it . These are our pick for the top categories. For more Scumbag insight, make sure to plug your laptop into your TV and tune into YoYouHeard.com this Sunday!
